Millennials and Gen Z are driving much of that shift, but they are not the only consumers paying attention. Shorr reported that 59% of Millennials and 56% of Gen Z had consciously purchased products with sustainable packaging in the previous six months. Gen X and Boomers were close behind, with 52% of Gen X and 49% of Boomers reporting the same behavior.

Consumers are also looking for packaging signals before they buy. According to Shorr, 54% of Millennials, 52% of Gen Z, 46% of Gen X, and 37% of Boomers had actively sought products with eco-friendly packaging, and many are willing to pay more for it. The study found that greenhouse gas emissions per unit dropped 50% between 2006 and 2020, along with reductions in energy use, water use, acid rain, smog, respiratory effects, and eutrophication.

Using the above data, a 2025 life-cycle assessment prepared by Anthesis for the Corrugated Packaging Alliance compared corrugated containers with reusable plastic containers for fresh produce transport and display in the U.S. Its purpose was to compare the relative environmental performance of the two container systems under ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards. The results support corrugated as a strong option when climate impact, energy use, recyclability, and supply chain efficiency matter. Corrugated containers outperformed reusable plastic containers in terms of global warming, respiratory health effects, and non-renewable energy use, where corrugated showed 57% to 110% better performance.
